Workshop: ACTIVE Skills for Reading: Increasing Reading Fluency

Abstract:
In this interactive workshop, reading specialist Neil Anderson will show teachers how students can increase their reading fluency and comprehension by using an ACTIVE approach to reading. Participants will learn best practices and considerations for teaching beginning to advanced students, and will walk away with practical ideas to use in their classrooms. Free materials for each workshop attendee. Target Audience: College & Secondary Reading & ELL Teachers.
About the Presenter:
Reading specialist Neil J. Anderson served as President of the International TESOL organization from 2001-2002. A Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University, Dr. Anderson has written numerous articles and books on reading, including Exploring Second Language Reading: Issues and Strategies (Heinle, 1999) and the reading series, ACTIVE Skills for Reading, now in its new 3rd edition (National Geographic Learning, 2013). Dr. Anderson received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, and his M.A. from Brigham Young University.

- Where: University of South Florida, Tampa Campus, at the INTO USF Center in FAO 100
Presenters:
•Dr. Lance Arney, Associate Director of the USF Office of Community Engagement & Partnerships
Dr. Arney will cover the basics of service-learning, share resources the OCEP office has available for USF and INTO USF faculty interested in integrating service learning into their courses, and provide some examples of existing service learning courses at USF.
•Dr. Eric Tucker, Ethics Professor and Service Learning Coordinator for the Honor’s College, St. Petersburg College
Dr. Tucker will speak about Intercultural Studies and Experiential Learning and share about his experience teaching service learning courses.
•Ms. Kristen McGreger, EAP Instructor at the USF English Language Program, INTO USF
Ms. McGreger will discuss the process USF’s English Language Program went through to develop a new service learning course, share ESL student survey results on interest in service learning, and discuss the course guide for the new Serving Learning class that is running for the first time this Spring semester.
Refreshments will be provided by INTO USF!
