Reaching Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education Through Culturally Responsive Teaching

With the growth in the number of immigrants and refugees in U.S. schools, there has been a significant increase in students with limited or interrupted education (SLIFE). These students face great challenges, especially at the secondary level, where they have little time to learn English, build grade-level content knowledge, and develop requisite literacy skills. Moreover, their prior experiences have shaped their ways of thinking and learning in ways different from those expected and valued in U.S. classrooms. I present a culturally responsive instructional model specifically developed to address the needs of SLIFE. This model is a mutually adaptive approach to instruction that facilitates the transition of this subpopulation of ELs to mainstream educational settings by focusing on the essential elements necessary for academic success.

Grammar for the Real World

Tuesday, October 21, 2014
3:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Hillsborough Community College – Dale Mabry Campus, Room DSTU-108

National Geographic Learning is offering a free Fall Professional Development Institute with Daphne Mackey.

RSVP by 10/20/14 to Cindy Le at cindy.le@cengage.com.

Workshop Abstract:
Real-world context is essential for engaging students in the grammar classroom. To mirror the requirements of academic life, grammar instruction should be delivered through contexts that are relevant, interesting, and that incorporate academic language and topics. Using examples from National Geographic Learning’s Grammar Explorer, this session will demonstrate how to go beyond grammar charts and instruction, challenging students to explore, learn, practice, think critically, and apply their new language. Free materials for each workshop attendee. Target Audience: Post-Secondary ESL Teachers.

About the Presenter:
Daphne Mackey is a veteran ESL professional, who has been in the field for over 35 years. She is the author of National Geographic Learning’s new exciting grammar series Grammar Explorer. She has written and co-written several ESL textbooks, including Contact USA, Grammar Plus, and Read This. For the past twenty-five years, Daphne has been working in the English Language Programs at the University of Washington as a program administrator and lecturer. She has also taught in the MBA program at Pacific Lutheran University and done training in business communication.
